Should I Write a Book?
Posted on Oct 8, 2007 3:21:18 PM  |  By SimplyStatedAdmin

Carmen Staicer
age 37 | writer and blogger | married, mother of six (ages 3 to 15) | Virginia Beach, Virginia

Something on my mind lately is… How to determine if I should write a book to help women achieve their goals in weight loss and healthy living like I have.

I realized, during Christmas break 2005, that the mental image I had of myself did not match up with the pictures I saw. I had developed poor eating habits and didn’t exercise because I was too busy with my life and my kids. I was also very depressed after my daughter was diagnosed with SID (sensory integration dysfunction), a neurological disorder associated with autism, and I used food as a comfort.

I changed my eating habits one step at a time and added daily exercise in teeny increments. I recently ran a half marathon — a goal I never thought I’d achieve. I also take capoeira, a Brazilian martial art, and feel tremendously empowered. I started out trying to lose weight, and along the way I found that I had developed a life instead.

I’d like to write a book to help others detailing exactly how I lost the weight and changed my lifestyle, but I’m finding that I’m my own biggest obstacle. I sometimes have doubts about whether the book would sell. And I struggle with being good enough. It’s the old “Who do you think you are, writing a book about diet, exercise, and weight loss?” However, if I’m feeling positive about myself, I think it’s a great idea and that I’m just the right person to write it.

My instinct is that if you feel something strongly, then you should go with it. Especially if it will benefit you and others, which it will.
You can combat your fears and use the book as a way to develop strength and overcome your obstacles. Who knows if it will sell or not, but even if one or two people's lives could be changed by your book, then it's worth it. It's also a lifeling accomplishment for you. Good luck!!

A strong instinct tells me I need to read your words... please share your experiences, your world, what has been going on in your mind and your heart during your tremendous challenge and accomplishment. A quote from Marianne Williamson: "Our deepest fear is not that we're inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyound all measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world." Please don't play small, please write the book!

You ask if you should write a book, heck yes, why not. Then you claim your own self doubts, "maybe it won't sell..." Then think about your question, "Should I write a book?" It doesn't ask, "will my book sell?" Who knows what the miriad of editors, publishers, retailers, and customers will think of your book. But if you never write it noone will ever know the wisdom you'll lock within its covers. So, yes, sit down and start organizing your thoughts into an outline of some form and start writing that book. The other thing to remember is this: On their death beds people never regret what they DID, just the things they DIDN'T DO....

Chris is right. It's not just about the weight loss, what you have said is about you coming to terms with your life. WIth the fact you weren't where you wanted to be, with the fact that your mom was right about the popular kids, with your daughter and her struggles. Its not just about the weight of your body, its about the weight of your life.

Write it! Write the book! Everyone is looking for that one big epiphany in life where they can say they changed and became who they wanted to be; half of us dont realize all the little ah-ha moments we have on the way to that one big one. Even though it may not make it as an "Oprah best seller" it will mean something to everyone that buys it on the little bookshelf at the coffee shop.

Write it for yourself first.
Then write it for us.

“Who do you think you are, writing a book about diet, exercise, and weight loss?”

I'll tell you who you are... you're an inspiration for all of us who are deep in the struggle. I'd love to read about your journey.

You inspire me every day-Yes! Write the book, I promise that I'll read it. And probably give it as a gift, too!!

Absolutely W R I T E the book! I wish it were already on shelves! If you can wait 18 months maybe I can be in the book too! I need to lose at least 50 - 75 pounds. Start writing - I'll let you know if I catch up.
Also, fantastic job on your weight - if you write the book you too can go on tour - just like in "Cheaper by the Dozen" - except you can call your tour "Cheaper by the 1/2 Dozen!"

write that book carmen!

Carmen, I definately think you should write a book. You have such good advice and your experience would be inspiration to many. I read your blog every day and I would buy your book if you wrote one. I think you should go for it. If we all listened to those nagging doubts we have about ourselves, think of all the stuff we wouldn't do.

yes

Carmen, you have such a talent -- I would LOVE to read a book written by you!

Posted by: Dianna| October 17, 2007 at 01:50 AM

Yes. Believe in yourself. See the book published. I can relate. As a writer who has lost 60 pounds from 2005-2007 and completely rediscovered myself. I came out from a dark cloud of self-doubt, especially as it concerns my writing. One of my proudest moments was writing my story for a local magazine and having other women tell me that it inspired them. I was afraid too. I thought the exact same thing..."who am I?" Well, why the heck not us? If you want to read my article go here: http://adserver1.harvestadsdepot.com/daypubco/ss/053271/ it starts on page 24.

Carmen, you should definitely write a book. You could use some of the posts on the subject you have already written. Your story is so inspiring! I hope to be like you when I grow up. :)

I think you should write the book. Even if it doesn't sell necessarily well -- or even if it doesn't get published -- you will have accomplished something that is important to you. There's no better reason to write. Or to do anything at all, for that matter.

Yes, Yes, Yes!! I know no one more suited to inspiring REAL women, REAL mothers, to take care of themselves as well as they do their families. You've already inspired me, and I for one would value a book from someone who's been there rather than one from some Fitness Guru, who in most cases hasn't been in my shoes and doesn't understand some of the roadblocks to fitness once you become a mother, and how to combat them.

I am a fan of your blog, and an overweight, overstressed mom. I am totally inspired by your weight loss and how along the way you have discovered your "inner jock"! I think a book about weight loss written by a busy, working mom like us living in the real world is just what we need! You sound like my best friends, when we find something that really works for us we share that info. Why should this be any different? You ask "why would anyone want to read anything I've written?" Just show them the before and after pictures and let them speak for themselves! You look fantastic!

Posted by: Tiffany| October 16, 2007 at 02:03 PM

I'd think a book written by someone who accomplished your kind of weight loss in the 'real world' or being a mom, wife, keeping the house, shopping, cooking, activities, etc. is well overdue. Any one of us could achieve a significant loss at a retreat or spa, but what you've done is so much more impressive. I say go!

Posted by: Azul| October 16, 2007 at 10:34 AM

yes, your advice is straight on but put out in a reasonable manner. You aren't advocating weird diet ideas. Actually you are advocating normal diet, lower fat, less amount, more exercise and much more patience. And you are interesting to read, I look forward to doing so every day.

Posted by: barbara| October 16, 2007 at 06:42 AM

I think you should. In the mean time, can you tell me how you managed to loose so much weight in which seems like such a little time? I have been struggling to loose even ten pounds for last five years. I would really appreciate it if you answered my question, I just cannot wait to get some tips until your book comes out. My email address is sujatashahi13@yahoo.com
Thank you in advance. If you cannot write to me, I will still wait for your book and still believe that you should write one.

Go for it! You are a shining example of how a woman can change her life!

Posted by: Brandy| October 16, 2007 at 12:51 AM

heck yes you should do it! Seriously, I'd rather read something from someone who was/is struggling through the same things I am and living to tell than read a bunch of scientific blah blah blah from someone who's never been there. YOU DID IT! Now, tell your story!

Please write a book!
