So I'm attempting to shed some pre-wedding weight. My goal isn't to drive myself crazy with a huge weight loss goal, but to at least slim down and shape up enough to sparkle. Hey, 15 and I'll be thrilled. I started on the South Beach Diet which worked for about two weeks. But as soon as I introduced "some (empahsis on "some") wholegrain breads" in Phase 2, I was, ahem, toast. Bring on the baguettes. I'm signing up for Weight Watchers next week. Fitness-wise, I've signed up for a beginner's Broadway dance class once a week. I've rejoined my gym. And I've signed up with a Pilates trainer who happens to be planning for her own wedding this summer. So far, Pilates is the one thing I've been able to stick to, and a lot of it has to do with the trainer. Making the appointment forces me to go and Stacey, my trainer is positive, encouraging and tough. Pilates is all about building your "core" -- those torso muscles none of us ever use properly -- and once you strengthen your core, everything else should line up, lengthen, and fall into place. And in between pumping my arms with my feet in "tabletop" and moving to the next exercise, Stacey might say, "Did you get your dress yet? I went into RK Bridal and nearly had a panic attack. But I found something really cool..." Having that sympatico with my trainer has made a huge difference. Why hasn't the dance class worked as well? The teacher is flat out mean, barking directions and quizzing us on le francais dance terminology ("Plie means what!?"); more insistent on rules than fun or fitness. She has three rules and rule #3 is "the teacher is always right." Who needs it. But I suppose I need to do more cardio and weight-lifting to make a big difference. Even Stacey has said that. Regardless, at the end of the day, the dress (which I'm having made) will fit. If at my first fitting in March it has to be taken in a little, gee darn. It's these bride shows like the icky new, "Bulging Brides," which don't help anyone's cause. ManoloBrides.com writes about the new WE network show which airs on Sunday: "Yes, at long last we have a show dedicated to informing brides to be that their lives will be ruined if they don’t lose those extra five or ten pounds before they march down the aisle in their cookie-cutter-inspired strapless gowns." Ugh. I won't be watching. The best advice, she adds, is "choose a gown that fits." Amen. NearlyWed Asks: Are you working out for your wedding? What's your regime of choice? Is a wedding workout plan worth the stress? br> br> --Margit Detweiler
Posted by: Stephanie Pascal| February 17, 2008 at 05:04 PM I purchased a gym membership in November, I have been a couple of times, but now that my wedding is in May, I have been forced into walking on the treadmill every day for 20-30 minutes.. I will go back to the gym but all my bridesmaids are more concerned with how they look... I am not perfect and i have no intention to strive to be a completely different person on my wedding day. I would like to get in better shape before the wedding. It's the best incentive that I've had yet to loose some of the tummy fat. My sister-in-law and I have joined a gym. We go on average every other day. We leave her 2 year old with my fiance. Currently the lack of working grown-ups in our house makes this workout plan the least stressful part of my life. It also helps with the stress of planning the wedding. I don't see this lasting the year and a half until the wedding but it's a good start. I hired a personal trainer 8 weeks before my wedding and with a few major adjustments in my diet I was able to look good in my dress. I hated every appointment and every sacrifice while I was doing it, but was very pleased with the results. Unfortunately, after the wedding I felt entitled to eat and I gained it all back (lol). Now I'm on a less drastic road to fitness. With all that said my advice is to find a dress that fits you now - whatever size you are -and just commit yourself to healthy changes in eating and exercise. If you don't lose 15 pounds you're still on the right track and the changes are guaranteed to have some impact both emotionally and physically and will probably last a lot longer. Don't stress yourself with trying to achieve an ideal weight. If he wants to marry you now he already loves the way you look : ) I am not working out for my wedding. I am a petite size 4 (my normal clothing size - NOT wedding dress size!) but I do have curves. For a small woman (5'3", 130lbs), I have decent sized hips, a bit of a bubble butt, and a C cup chest. But thats just how I am and how I've always been. It makes me look like a woman and not a 12 year old boy (like many of the runway models!). I'm just choosing a dress that fits and sticking with how I am. I don't need the stress of trying to slim down for one day in my life. My fiance asked me to marry him for who I am and how I look. He's not expecting me to look different. I would suggest that to anyone else, regardless of your size. Buy a dress that flatters your shape and remember that your husband to be loves you exactly as you are now. I purchased my dress in the size I need now. I am just hoping that I fit into it when the day arrives. I have about a year. I eat healthy, but I don't seem to be able to work exercise into my day. My fiance is concerned about his weight as well and wants to get into an exercise routine with me. Any suggestions or than a gym membership? I have one word for you Spinning. It will change your life!! Oh..I meant Spinnig and the South Beach Diet!! I've lost 15 pounds and has totally changed the way I will eat forever I am definitely working out for my wedding. I work out 5 days a week: one day with a trainer, two days of bosu class, and two days of circuit training, and everyday I'm at the gym (all 5) I run 3-4 miles and walk 1 mile. I started this regime on Jan 14, 2008, I feel great, I'm down 14 lbs, 7 inches and have added great muscle mass to my body. I've also cut out about 500 calories a day and eat decently during the week, but allow my love of food to come out on Friday and Saturday evenings. ACTUALLY the wedding workout is what's keeping me sane. I also have a full time job that involves overtime but I make time for the gym, and if I can't make it one day I don't get down on myself ever. So far, so good. I ordered my dress in the size I AM, while promising myself (and the dress) that I will be getting it taken in no matter what! I'm on a regular running regime...6 days a week starting with 15 min of jogging and (hopefully) working my way up to a 5k within a couple of months. How do I keep going when I'm exhausted, sweaty and short of breath? I start reciting "I don't want to be a fat bride" to the sound of my pounding feet! I had so much trouble with this, I had a wedding dress to fit in and now a bridesmaids dress that was bought for me before I could try it on. I used this download for my wedding dress and now has come in handy for this wedding I'm in at the end of this month. My best friend couldn't find a dress that would fit after having 2 kids, this helped and she got the most amazing dress I have ever seen... I highly sugest this. Sorry I dont think that link worked... but it should be attached to my name now. I added it as a url on this blog... just click my name... |

I worked out before my wedding to make sure the dress would still fit after all of those bridal showers and bachleorette parties before the big day. It was worth the peace of mind and was a good de-stressor, however, I would not advise losing weight just for the big day-planning a wedding is hard enough without extra dare-to-be-Barbie expectations added on to your special day.
