Observations
The Life's-Too-Short List
Posted on Jan 11, 2008 1:36:53 PM  |  By KristinVanOgtrop

Some years ago writer Shirley Conran observed that life's too short to stuff a mushroom. I think about that quote all the time and now, in the spirit of New Year's resolutions, I present my own very subjective and by no means exhaustive list.

In my book, life's too short to:

  • iron cloth napkins
  • care why Britney Spears is so screwed up
  • start a plant from seed, unless it's a morning glory
  • drink coffee with skim milk
  • finish a book I don't like
  • use cloth diapers
  • attempt to correct the havoc having three children wreaked on my abdomen
  • boycott boxed macaroni and cheese
  • go to the office on the weekend
  • keep a friend who is not nice to me
  • read more than one article about the impact of Hillary almost crying in New Hampshire:

  • try to rescusitate a nearly dead houseplant
  • go to a party when I'd rather stay home
  • make pie crust from scratch

Life is too short to worry about tomorrow because today is all we're sure of. I retired 7 months after my husband died and now I grieve a bit and then go do something fun, grieve some more and remember the good times (and there were lots), greive some more and go play with the grandkids. Life is too short not to laugh and play in the snow and mess up the kitchen baking with the kids and spend time playing in the garden hoping for results. I'm learning to try anything once and to drop the dishcloth when someone says 'do you want to go for a walk?"

Life's too short to waste it doing the least challenging, most repetitive things available.
Some days, we have to play it simple and easy. But not every time, please. Read the classic you've always meant to sit down with. Paint the ugly wall instead of ignoring it (or hiding it behind pictures). Drive to someplace different over the weekend, and really enjoy it instead of thinking about what has to be done before Monday. Go see someone in a nursing home. Plan a special outing with the kids instead of a trip to the fast-food joint.
In other words, make life fun, and ignore what just doesn't work for you. Like - I agree - reading bad books.

Every single one of you wrote such great "Life is Too Short"s!
    I love that phrase.
One of mine is 'Life is too short to feel guilty about everything'.

Life is too short to not know where you are going when you die.

Life is too short to not know where you are going when you die. I know. Do you?

That reminds me... it's a great idea to read "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff- and it's all small stuff" by Richard Carlson.

Life is too short not to enjoy the absolute awsome taste of real vanila bean ice cream (all the fat included)

I just received my very first issue of Real Simple and decided to check out your web site. I was thinking what a great magazine and what a cool web site until I read the first article, "The Life's-Too-Short List" with it's clip of Fox News demeaning Hillary Clinton. Fox News is nothing but a Republican propaganda machine. I can't believe you let that get by your editors. I now have to believe this publication has an agenda and it's not one that I am at all interested in. How do I get my money back?

Life's too short to worry about keeping the house clean instead of spending time with my children. I can clean house later; my children grow and change everyday and I don't want to waste a minute of the time I have with them.

Thanks! yes....life is too short to worry about tomorrow, the next hour, minute, second....you can plan until you are blue in the face and things NEVER turn out like you think they will. Life is too short to NOT take the redeye, in order to spend more time with a loved one. Life is too short to be in the wrong job, relationship, friendship, or living space! Life is too short to worry about what others think, worry about not being married, not having kids, not owning a home, not having the right purse, car, shoes , coat!!!! Seize the moment...you never know what tomorrow will bring.....Oh and life is too short to NOT be flexible..learned that from my 97 year old grandma!

I fully diagree on the cloth diapers. Life's not to short to recycle or care about the environment. Women used cloth diapers for thousands of years before disposables came along and they had shorter life spans.

What should be on the list - Life is to short to waste it watching television!

life's to short to mail holiday cards to everyone you know and then saying something so impersonal and that you say in every card like best wishes. I'd rather spend time with family and friends or reading a good book or getting together with girlfriends or hand making a gift.

Life's too short not to search for the true meaning of it.
I love this blog and your honesty - keep it up!

Life's too short to read lists that start with 'life's too short to'

    *lol* ;)

Is life too short for me to take the time to write that I find it extremely inappropriate that you casually dismiss the use of cloth diapers when using them can make such a healthy impact on both the environment and the children using them? Apparently not :)

I know this is a subjective list - but to me it is like saying "Life is too short to drive cars that get better gas mileage or to care how much of our planet we fill with garbage," which maybe you also feel to be true.

Additionally - the diaper article referenced is over two years old and incomplete.

I commend you for having the courage to quote Fox News, the only reliable source of balanced news. Life's too short to watch all the other networks spew only biased liberal propaganda. And if it means returning a few dollars to intolerant people, so be it! (this post ended up in the gladiator column somehow but it was meant to go here...)

    Life is too short:
.to not sing out loud, and off key to radio music on my commute
.to not day dream about kissing my boyfriend when I see him next

I agree totally. I should write my own list for my mum - who's in her fifties and is getting into her second swing of life! Thanks!

Life is too short to stop using your brain and watch what passes for "news" on Fox.
