As far as I'm concerned there aren't enough things in life that are accompanied by the blare of trumpets. My husband and I had trumpets at our wedding, but I wish somehow I could have arranged trumpets for the day I got my first magazine job, the weekend we moved out of the city, and the moment all three of our children were born. Now I want trumpets to mark the end of our kitchen renovation. I came home the other night to find the protective paper gone from the counters and floors, the plastic removed from the cabinets, and no sign of painter's tape anywhere. I sort of knew it was coming, but still — it was such a MOMENT. And as great as that moment was, it would have been even better with trumpets. After I told him this story, my longtime colleague Jim Baker observed that I'm always looking for the ta-da moment. He's right. If there were just a few more ta-da moments in life, both small ("I folded all the laundry!" "I played Stratego even though I don't like it!" "I didn't pick a fight when you walked through the living room with muddy shoes!") and big ("We have a kitchen again!"), life would certainly be a lot more fun. Do you think there's a way I can find a trumpet ringtone on my phone? Not exactly the same thing, but a step in the right direction. And when I actually learn to program my own ringtone instead of relying on my 12-year-old to do it for me — well, we're going to need trumpets then too.
Posted by: Staci| November 16, 2007 at 05:01 PM Congratulations on your new kitchen, finally! I hope that you enjoy it. It seems obvious that you should be cooking for Thanksgiving; maybe it will be more fun in a new kitchen! There must a new appliance that can help get it done, faster, easier or clean-up better. Some of the smaller ta-da's definitely smaller than say the birth of a child, more like doing all the laundry on the basement floor, in my opinion should probably just get a standing "O", preferrably by someone other than me! Actually, it's good to be recognized and thanked for all things, big and small. Wow, how cool that your kitchen is finished just in time for Thanksgiving! Congratulations, and enjoy! (Oh, and those of us who read your blog faithfully wouldn't mind seeing a few photos...just a thought!) I was reading your editorial and saw that you have a blog and thought that it might have more "gratitude" ideas so I ended up here. I have a major TADA each day with the remodel on our house. We added 12 X 20 dining room and huge pantry. We started the 1st of April and the builder estimated 2 MONTHS but in all actuality it was 5 MONTHS. Kind of the same but not even close. Come to find out we also needed a new roof and had to wait out a spring snow storm, as we live in Montana. Everything just took so much longer. Did I mention that the builder got married in the middle of the project and took a honeymoon to Vegas. But it is all done now and each morning as I come down the stairs it is "TADA" this is my new house. Oh yeah...ta da. I recognize it now. That's the sound I hear faintly in the distance (the distance inside my mind) after I finish my morning workout. It's the trumpet intro to the day. It's soft, but steady, and profound. I knew I've heard that sound somewhere, but didn't remember where. Thanks. Chris, I wish I were cooking Thanksgiving in our new kitchen. The plus side: my mother-in-law is an amazing cook. And I'm very happy to take instruction. Happy Thanksgiving to you too. Congrats on the kitchen!! That's awesome : ) And good luck with that ringtone LOL My ta-da is very small- I got my husband to help get the kids ready in the morning as we are all getting ready for work/school. It doesn't diminish my ta-da at all that he has made up a song that he sings while doing this...it goes something like, "Daddy needs help, he's losing his patience...can you all stop screaming, before I run away..." I laugh every time I hear him singing- and starting my day with a smile is a ta-da to me! Congradulations. I remember my parents redid our kitchen growing up and that we all were actually sick of restaurants by the end of it and happy to get back to cooking. Enjoy! ooooh how wonderful!!! Your kitchen back, your house is yours, you can reclaim your sanity!! A year and half later, I still walk into my new (it's still new, right?) kitchen in full-out amazement and gratefulness and cook up a storm. ahhhhhh. Good news! My husband found some trumpet ringtones. Bad news, the site clearly states not to download...sorry. If you want to be a rebel, I'll get the site. There's just go to be something out there that would give you your "ta-dah" without feeling like you are going to be whisked away by the internet police after each ring! |

Oh I'm sooo happy your kitchen renovation is done! Lots of great memories made and to make in that room! ENJOY! I myself am having a ta-da moment right now! (It's a small one-but I think it counts) I am sitting at my computer in the middle of the day eating ROLOS (leftover from last night's Bunco party) ---NO CHILDREN asking for snacks--just me in the solitude of our house and I mean it is quiet and I love it! ( If you are wondering if my children are ok, they are with my dear husband having the time of their lives riding on the golf cart and feeding the fish down at our pond!) I'm sure they too are having manly ta-da times as well! Maybe it doesn't deserve a trumpet ta-da but at least a loud vibrato voice TA-DA! Long and short of it...yes, I think there is a ringtone out there...my husband is a genius at finding the perfect ones! I'll give that task to him---your 12 year-old will probably already have one downloaded before my hubby gets back from the pond! (And to be honest, I hope he does because that would mean that my ta-da moment must come to an end! Bring 'em on! I'm ready! It's amazing what just a little ta-da can do for you!) Enjoy your weekend and your new kitchen! What's for dinner!!!!
